Creatine, identified by its PubChem CID 586, is an amino acid derivative with the molecular formula C4H9N3O2.

Its IUPAC name is 2-(carbamimidoyl-methyl-amino)acetic acid. Structurally, creatine consists of a glycine backbone with methyl and amidino groups attached to the nitrogen atoms. It naturally exists in various tautomeric forms, including zwitterionic states, depending on the solution environment.

POTENCY

While creatine is highly effective in its powdered form, its potency can decline rapidly when dissolved in liquid due to environmental factors like pH, temperature, and time. Proper storage and timely consumption are essential for maximizing its benefits.

Creatine's stability is a critical factor when it comes to its effectiveness as a supplement, particularly when dissolved in water or other liquids. In aqueous solutions, creatine gradually degrades into creatinine, a biologically inactive byproduct, through a process called cyclization. This transformation occurs as the amino and carboxylic acid groups within the creatine molecule interact to form a cyclic structure. While creatinine is harmless and excreted by the body, its formation reduces the amount of active creatine available, diminishing the supplement's intended benefits.

Several factors influence the rate of this degradation. pH levels play a significant role: creatine is relatively stable in acidic environments (e.g., pH below 4), which is why it can remain intact in stomach acid for some time. However, in neutral or alkaline solutions (e.g., pH 7 or higher), the degradation process accelerates significantly. Temperature is another key factor—higher temperatures increase the rate of creatine breakdown, which is why storing creatine in cool, dry conditions is recommended. Additionally, prolonged exposure to liquid further exacerbates the loss of potency, with studies showing that creatine solutions can lose a substantial portion of their active content within hours at room temperature.
